Sabbatical Day 42

28 Feb

Read additional essays by supply siders Larry Kudlow, Stephen Moore and Art Laffer.  I will have much to write about their economic views during the 1990s and during the housing boom.  Spent some time with my student research assistants who provided me with more material for the bubble book and my next project on social entrepreneurship.

28 Feb

“In yet another awkwardly rational response to government intervention in deciding what’s “fair”, the blowback from minimum wage demanding fast food workers has struck again. Wendy’s plans to install self-ordering kiosks in 1,000 of its stores – 16% of its locations nationwide.”

On Military and Spending, It’s Trump Versus Trump

28 Feb

“It can be a challenge to follow the pronouncements of President Trump, as he often seems to change his position on any number of items from week to week, or from day to day, or even from minute to minute. Consider his speech last week at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC).”

Jerome Tuccille, Libertarian Author and Trump Biographer, Dies at 79 – The New York Times

27 Feb

Jerry was funny, witty and a great writer.  He was one of the leaders in early days of the modern libertarian movement. I met Jerry when he was the Libertarian nominee for governor in 1974.  We immediately became friends.  He will be missed by everyone who knew him.

“Mr. Tuccille was a disaffected Roman Catholic looking for a new faith when he discovered the writings of Ayn Rand.”

Economic Globalization Is Not Political Globalization

“Globalization has fallen into disrepute. More and more people are rejecting it outright as unfair and as a source of all sorts of evil — including economic crises and migration.”

The Seasonal Republican Welfare Program

27 Feb

The welfare program all the political elites love.

“The period from about the last week in February to the end of March is like a second Christmas season for some businesses. It is the time when millions of Americans receive their income tax refunds and suddenly have extra hundreds, and even thousands, of dollars to spend. But all tax refunds are not…”

Sweden Is Sliding Into Chaos — and the Media Is Applauding

26 Feb

“Sweden has been dominating the news since Donald Trump mentioned the troubled Scandinavian country during a rally on Saturday in Florida. Trump mentioned Sweden while speaking about the massive transformations various European countries have undergone as a result of the ongoing “migrant crisis”.Here’s the line that got Trump in trouble: “You look at what’s happening last night in Sweden” — Poor choice of words perhaps but the context was clear. The lying press took this to mean that he was referring to a specific terrorist attack that had occurred recently.”
