Lessons from Canada about healthcare

When Dr. Jacques Chaoulli, a French trained physician, decided to emigrate to the New World in 1979, he made the decision to go to Canada, rather than the United States. He wanted to live in the country that was more compassionate. After all, any government that provides its citizens with health care must have its priorities straight, holding a kind regard for the poor.

Questions for Paul Krugman

27 Sep

Paul Krugman, Nobel Laureate in Economics, Princeton University professor and New York Times columnist, will speak at Ramapo College on September 29th.   Krugman is the president of the Eastern Economic Association, which is housed in the Anisfield School of Business at Ramapo.  Before Krugman makes his presentation, he will dedicate the Global Financial Markets Trading Lab in the business school. The BS GOP “Pledge to America” and what should replace it

25 Sep

With much fanfare including a photo op away from the nation’s capital, GOP congressional leaders rolled out their “Pledge to America,” which includes all the images (Statue of Liberty, Mount Rushmore, small businesses, town hall meetings and of course the American flag) to invoke a warm and fuzzy feeling among the electorate who appear ready to vote overwhelming for Republicans in the midterm elections.

New Jersey needs a zero income tax rate

23 Sep

Governor Christie stated on Bloomberg radio he wants to cut the state income tax in order to make New Jersey more attractive than Pennsylvania and New York to do business.  However, if the governor wants to make New Jersey one of the most attractive states in America to do business, if not the most attractive, the income tax should be cut all the way to zero.  By phasing out the income tax over the next several years, Governor Christie and the Legislature would strike a major blow for liberty and prosperity, the New Jersey state motto.

Useful idiots

20 Sep

V.I. Lenin, the first supreme leader of the Soviet Union, allegedly said that western supporters of the communist regime were “useful idiots.”  Whether or not Lenin said this is beside the point, because in the United States, we have an abundance of ‘useful idiots” who still believe the Bush invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq were necessary for the national security of the United States.

The counter counterrevolution continues

16 Sep

The results of the GOP primaries this year reveal one indisputable fact; grassroots Republicans are angry, frustrated, and disgusted; they want to restrain the power of the federal government.  We will have to wait until November 2nd to see if Democrats and Independents feel the same way as GOP activists, who have sent a clear message to the GOP establishment, enough of your rhetoric, enough of your big government policies, it’s time to restore the principles of freedom, liberty and limited government.

What real school choice would look like

13 Sep

Last Friday Governor Christie signed a “school choice” bill that gives (some) parents the ability to send their children to schools outside their home districts.  One provision of the bill would allow 10 percent of a district’s students to attend another school in the state.  The home school district would be required to transport these students to schools located at least two miles but not more than 20 miles from their homes.

Obamanomics 101: I love big government, the free market, and American values

11 Sep

Last week, President Obama made a speech in Ohio about the economy.  Below are excerpts from the speech and reveals what we know about seasoned politicians—they want everyone to love them except their political rivals.  President Obama also demonstrates a lack of understanding of the free market, the role of government in a free society, and what caused our financial crisis.

Letting housing prices fall to clear the market–what a concept!

06 Sep

The New York Times is reporting that the federal government’s efforts to prop up the sagging housing market have not worked (what a surprise!); the housing market is still mired in a depression.  Instead of calling on the federal government to “stimulate” the housing market to prop up demand—and prices—analysts are now calling for the unthinkable just a few months ago, letting housing prices find their equilibrium levels in a free market.

A letter from a Ramapo College alum

02 Sep

Dear Dr. Sabrin:

As an amateur economist and graduate of these hallowed halls at Ramapo, I ask you and wonder as I notice the Ramapo website as they’ve invited “economist” Paul Krugman to speak there.  I was hopeful that you would speak for all of those common sense people who understand that the free-market system does work and printing money into obscurity doesn’t create a well functioning economy unless Dr. Krugman really believes that Zimbabwe’s economic system is treating their people just peachy.

Christie, Schundler, Obama and education

02 Sep

The federal government will finish this fiscal year, ending September 30th, with a $1.4 trillion deficit.  Instead of reining in federal spending to get its fiscal house in order, the Obama administration is desperately trying to “stimulate’ the economy with money it does not have, including sending more money to public school’s via a competition, “Race to the Top,” supposedly to enact “education reform.”
